On the 27th of January 2010 I proudly received one of this years twenty four "Young Elite Researcher Price" award by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation under Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The price ceremony was conducted in the Greek style temple hall of the New Carlsberg Glyptoteket (Museum for classical arts). The ceremony included a beautiful and highly emotional concert by the Danish Radio's Girls Choir. Especially their Acappella version of Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" and "Heal the World" sent a chill of excitement down the spine.

Reception

What will I use the price for

In addition to the honour the award also included a cash price which the receiver can use for scientific purposes, such as additional material and travel.

I plan to use part of the money to visit an international research group at John Hopkins University (US) which is also working with iterative polyketide synthases from fungi.

The rest of the money will be used for the completion of several research projects that I did not have time to finish during my time as a Ph.D. student. Especially, a project aimed at linkig all iterative polyketide synthase encoding genes found in the plant pathogic fungus Fusarium graminearum to their metabolites is very close to my heart. The existence of bioactive, and potentially dangerous mycotoxins, in our food is a serious problem which will have to be addressed. It has been hard to attract funds for this project, but it is my hope that the price will allow me to complete the project, aided by master and bachelor students.
